Versatile Artists

17/04/2025

These days, the question often arises: is it really a good thing for an artist to be versatile? And I've come to the conclusion that yes, it absolutely is. Let me explain this briefly:

I believe that today's fast-paced lifestyle and social media put a lot of pressure on artists, suggesting that you should only work in one style or genre if you want to be remembered. But a person can flourish in more than one area. By experimenting with different tools, themes, styles, or even genres, you can actually get closer to finding your own voice, instead of settling too early on just one path. Maybe this means you'll gain followers and recognition more slowly on social platforms, and maybe you're someone for whom that's (already) not such a priority.

Even the greatest, most iconic artists experiment and try out new things. For example, Johnny Depp is also a visual artist and a musician - he just happens to be famous for acting, and even within acting, he is versatile. Personally, I love Picasso's earlier period either, when he painted in a more traditional, realistic style - especially some masterpieces from his "blue period". Or take Antoine de Saint-Exupéry- The Little Prince's illustrations are just as beautiful as the story itself, and both were made by him.

So social media or not, the point is: don't give in to the pressure, and don't lock yourself into mechanical work too early, or you might burn out before you even hit your stride. Give yourself the space to explore, like a child who sees every new thing as a great adventure. ^^
